Blue Light Emergency Phones

There are 54 blue light emergency phones currently in place on campus in high traffic areas such as parking lots, bus stops and common areas. There are three different types of such phones in use, however, all can be identified by the blue light located on or near each unit. These lights are automatically lit after dark and, on the new tower-style units, flash when in use.

The location of emergency phones are indicated on the main campus maps as a yellow circle with the numbers "911" inside. Please note that the campus maps do not currently show the 14 new emergency phones, but will be updated in the near future. A map of just the new phones is available below

In addition, a complete text list of all 54 emergency phones is available by clicking on the following link:

New Emergency Phones

Fourteen new tower-style emergency phones were installed on campus during summer 2007 as part of an on-going effort to improve the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff. The majority of these phones are located in the four large parking lots (West Remote, North Remote, Hahn, and East Remote) with the rest at bus stops.

Locations

Each large parking lot (West Remote, North Remote, Hahn, and East Remote) now has three new emergency phones, located at the entrance, center, and back of each lot. In addition, there are phones at the Cowell bus stop (near Quarry Plaza) and the Oakes bus stop (near the lower College Eight parking lot). (The Core West Parking Structure has three older-style emergency phones on each parking level, located at the east and west ends, as well as at the middle stairwell near Baskin Engineering.)

How to Use the New Phones

The phones are activated by pressing the large red button, which will automatically connect the caller to the campus Dispatch Center. At the same time, a high-intensity strobe light at the top of the phone will activate, providing a beacon for police officers to locate the person in distress.

Older Box-Style Emergency Phones

In addition to the 14 new phones, there are 40 older box-style emergency phones on campus. These older phones vary between two different, but similar designs and are all identified by a blue light on or near the unit.

Type 1 (Push Button)

The first box-style emergency phone features a red-painted metal box with a blue light on top and a speaker phone panel inside that is similar to the newer units. Most of these phones are mounted on wooden posts in exterior locations, except for the wall mounted units inside the Core West Parking Structure (at the front, middle and back of each floor).

These phones are used by opening the box and pressing the red button inside, which will connect the phone to campus dispatch.

Type 2 (Telephone Handset)

The second older box-style emergency phone features a slightly different red-painted metal box and are all wall-mounted with the blue light also wall-mounted near the box. These units have a traditional telephone handset inside.

These phones are used by picking up the handset, which automatically connects the phone to campus dispatch. Even though there is a rotary dial, it is not necessary to dial any number.
